I'll admit it: if left to my own devices, I'll just lob everything into a suitcase last minute and then kneel on it to get it shut. Which works OK-ish until you're just travelling with a carry-on bag. Packing cubes can really help – they sit neatly in your case, maximising the space and focusing your mind on what needs to be in each. Which means that you don't, as I did in Bath last year, turn up without any knickers packed. For ease, choose a set with mesh panels so you can see their contents, or go for different patterns or colours and devote each to a different item – chargers, meds, socks, etc – so you easily identify which bag you're looking for.
